AODD PUMPS SOLVE CLOGGING CHALLENGES AT MEAT PROCESSING & RENDERING FACILITIES

For decades, the meat and poultry processing industry has trusted SANDPIPER heavy-duty flap valve pumps to solve common clogging challenges from slaughter to wastewater treatment.

heavy duty flap pump moves solidsThe first SANDPIPER heavy-duty flap valve air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump was invented by Mr. Warren Rupp in 1968, and by the early 1970s, it had already established itself as the workhorse in meat and poultry processing facilities because of its unique ability to pass large solids that would clog other pumps. In fact, the SANDPIPER heavy-duty flap became known as the animal “blood pump” because it could easily pump the solids that would find their way into the blood collection areas.

From pigs, cattle, and sheep to chickens and turkeys, the processing steps are similar. Every step of the process presents unique pumping challenges.

COMMON MEAT PROCESSING APPLICATIONS FOR SANDPIPER AODD PUMPS

  • Bleeding: Pumps used for blood collection and transfer need to be self-priming, handle entrained air, be non-shearing or damaging, and handle solids like chicken heads and beaks.
  • Rinsing, Scalding, and Hair/Feather Removal: Most pumps can handle clear water but most cannot handle water containing solids such as feathers, wool, hair, hooves, toenails, feet, and chicken heads.
  • Evisceration: Any and all types of animal waste and parts find their way to the floor during evisceration and enter the sump system. Pumps must be able to handle solids such as casing waste.
  • Wastewater: Many plant wastewater treatment facilities utilize some type of technology that creates a solids-laden sludge. Pumps need to be able to self-prime and transfer sludge with entrained air, high viscosity, as well as solids.
  • CIP and COP Chemical Cleaning and Sanitation Systems: Transfer and blending of chemicals where safe, leak-free performance is paramount
  • Plant sump systems frequently utilize AODD flap valve pumps to keep all the stages of the process flowing.
