    SELECTING THE RIGHT PUMP TECHNOLOGY

How Do I Choose Between an EODD Pump and Other Pump Technologies?

Selecting the right pump technology depends on your facility's operational priorities, including uptime, maintenance requirements, energy consumption, and process reliability. Cognito EODD pumps combine the benefits of diaphragm pumps with the efficiency of electric operation, making them a strong alternative to many traditional pump technologies.

EODD pumps are ideal when you need:

    • Reliable pumping of abrasive or solids-laden fluids
    • Low-shear transfer for sensitive materials
    • Energy efficiency compared to pneumatic pumps
    • A sealless design to reduce leak risk
    • Simple maintenance and reduced downtime

    EODD Pump FAQs

    Performance

How does an electric diaphragm pump work?
An electric diaphragm pump uses a motor-driven mechanism to move flexible diaphragms back and forth, creating suction and discharge to transfer fluid. The sealless design isolates the fluid, allowing for reliable, leak-free operation. This makes EODD pumps well suited to abrasive, viscous, or shear-sensitive materials.

Can EODD pumps handle abrasive liquids?
Yes. EODD pumps are engineered to handle abrasive fluids like ceramic slip. Hardened stainless steel stopper cages protect critical areas such as manifold elbows and outer fluid chambers, extending service life well beyond standard aluminum components. The internal flow path directs fluid toward the durable outer diaphragm plates, reducing direct impact on the diaphragms and improving overall longevity.

Can fluids containing solids be pumped?
Yes. Fluids containing solids can be pumped without damaging the pump, thanks to the open-tolerance design of the fluid flow path, the same principle used across other diaphragm pump technologies engineered by SANDPIPER.

    Are Cognito EODD pumps self-priming?
Yes. Cognito EODD pumps are fully self-priming and can achieve suction lifts up to 8 meters (26 feet) in wet conditions. With no rotating mechanical seals to fail or leak, they offer reliable, leak-free operation.

How do Cognito EODD pumps handle shear-sensitive products like paint or latex?
Cognito EODD pumps are a strong choice for shear-sensitive fluids. Their gentle pumping action and absence of close-tolerance components help prevent product separation or damage, making them well suited to paint, latex, and other delicate fluids.

What is the best way to control an EODD pump?
The recommended control method is a variable speed drive (VFD), which offers precise flow control and protects the motor during startup. A soft starter can also be used but offers less flexibility. For deadhead applications, a pressure sensor on the discharge side is the ideal way to monitor system pressure. All EODD pump systems should include a pressure relief valve and/or circulation loop to protect against pressure spikes and ensure safe operation.

    Safety

Is leak detection available on EODD pumps?
Leak detection comes standard on all Cognito EODD units. Integrated probes can be wired to the pump controls to automatically shut the pump down in the event of a diaphragm failure or fluid leak.

What happens when a diaphragm ruptures? Does liquid leave the pump or damage its internals?
Cognito EODD pumps feature double shaft lip seals and PTFE-coated spill containment chambers that capture fluid entering behind the diaphragm. This design protects the people, the pump, and the process, preventing leaks and internal damage.

Is an EODD pump quieter than a comparable AODD unit?
Yes. Cognito EODD pumps operate at less than 80 dB across the entire flow range. AODD pumps can exceed 100 dB, well above the 85 dB threshold where hearing protection is typically required. Cognito EODD pumps are also CE and ATEX certified for hazardous environments.

    Sustainability, Efficiency, & Cost reduction

Can EODD pumps reduce energy consumption?
Yes. Cognito EODD pumps can reduce energy usage by up to 75% compared to pneumatic pumps, and they free up air compressor capacity since they operate without compressed air.

Are EODD pumps expensive to maintain?
No. Cognito EODD pumps are built for easy, low-cost maintenance. The drive side requires only periodic oil changes, while the fluid side uses affordable diaphragms and valve balls that can be replaced as needed. There are no costly rotating mechanical seals, rotors, or stators to maintain.

Can I specify a particular motor or gearbox brand, or am I required to use the manufacturer's offering?
You can specify your preferred motor and gearbox brands, and our team will help ensure proper selection. Since the motor and gearbox are independent of the pump head, they can be repaired or replaced in the future without disturbing the fluid piping.

    Applications & Industries

What are some common applications for EODD pumps?

Cognito EODD pumps are built for demanding applications with long duty cycles, high-viscosity or abrasive fluids, and operations focused on energy savings, including:

    • Wastewater/filter press feed: Delivers consistent high pressures and flow rates, up to 8 bar (116 psi) and 800 LPM (211 GPM), for filter press applications
    • Corrugated packaging: Transfers starch, inks, and glues that are viscous, abrasive, and shear-sensitive, and handles sump evacuation
    • Ceramic transfer: Handles glaze and slip delivery in the production of ceramic fixtures and converters
    • Tank bottom recirculation: Provides reliable recirculation of fluids from tank bottoms to maintain process consistency
